Pustynia/ Wüste exhibition at Austrian Cultural Forum Warsaw as an outcome of Saharan Residency

In March 2019 I went to a residency Cafe Tissardmine in Western Sahara in Morocco. The residency is run by an artist and cultural manager Karen Hadfield and it’s a real treasure.

It is at this residency where I met Andrea Peregrini, an Austrian sound artist based in Zwettle area in Austria, where most beautiful plateau with old huge stones is. Andrea is a sound artist connected to Vienna sound art and artistic research scene.
During my stay in Morocco I was primarily interested in reading and researching more about decolonial social choreographies and thinking of social behaviors outside of the cultural heritage coding.
But once arrived it was clear to me, that much more interesting are the non human subject and the experience of being in the desert and endless wandering. The very focus on the human subjects seemed out of place even, as I was questioning what right do I have to film and engage in documentation of situations, which I am not a part of, and how it makes these observations turn into questionable ethnology.
I began to film everything, and trying to be more attentive towards how I felt about the filming itself. I was walking and filming, sometimes having my camera put away and sometimes pointed at random things, but mostly stones. Andrea was aiming to record as well – but her tools were directed at sounds. Together with another artist who was staying at the time in Tissardmine- Carina Cheung, we made trips and explorations, mostly collecting stones in large quantities.
I returned to Amsterdam with a handfull of video material and a bag full of stones and I dived into other projects. Only in 2021 I was approached by Stanisław Welbel who is a Warsaw based curator, who offered me a collaboration. According to the programming of the Austrian Cultural Forum, which he works for, the invitation extends to a collaborating artist who must be based in Austria. I immediately thought of Andrea and her recordings and to my great joy she accepted the invitation.
In the early 2022 I found myself visiting her home in Zwettle and working together on a quadrophonic audiovisual installation composed from our materials.
In April 2022 we already had an exhibition, wonderfully curated by Stanisław Welbel, who encouraged us also to show objects.

The exhibition is the result of cooperation between Julia Sokolnicka (PL) and Andrea Peregrini (AT), who met in 2019 during the Café Tissardmine artist residency in Morocco, near Erfoud (Western Sahara). The residence is located in traditional buildings near an Amazyg (Berber) village and is run by Australian-English cultural producer Karen Hadfield. Car rallies, film crews and ordinary tourists often take place in the area. The local community is also engaged in traditional crafts and date cultivation.
The artists use different media, Andrea deals with sound and Julia deals with film. During the residency, they not only recorded field recordings and films, but above all, they reflected on the possibilities and limitations that lay ahead of them as artists and visitors who appeared in this place for a short time. In this way, their work became a reflection on the position and role of the tourist, ways of perception and issues related to the control provided by the power to look through the camera lens or listen and record with a microphone in the context of interpersonal and interspecies relations. In the background of their joint work there are questions about the ethical side of creating art as part of artistic residency programs, especially in the postcolonial context.

Wystawa jest rezultatem współpracy pomiędzy Julią Sokolnicką (PL) a Andreą Peregrini (AT), które spotkały się w 2019 roku podczas rezydencji artystycznej Café Tissardmine w Maroku, w pobliżu Erfoud (Sahara Zachodnia). Rezydencja mieści się w tradycyjnych zabudowaniach w pobliżu wioski Amazygów (Berberów), prowadzi ją australijsko-angielska producentka kulturalna Karen Hadfield. W okolicy często odbywają się samochodowe rajdy, pojawiają się ekipy filmowe i zwykli turyści. Lokalna społeczność zajmuje się również tradycyjnym rzemiosłem i uprawą daktyli.
Artystki posługują się różnymi mediami, Andrea zajmuje się dźwiękiem a Julia filmem. Podczas rezydencji nie tylko rejestrowały nagrania terenowe i filmowały, ale przede wszystkim zastanawiały się nad możliwościami i ograniczeniami, jakie przed nimi stały, jako artystkami oraz przybyszkami, pojawiającymi się przecież w tym miejscu przez krótki czas. W ten sposób ich praca stała się refleksją na temat pozycji i roli turysty, sposobów percepcji oraz kwestii związanych z kontrolą jaką daje władza spojrzenia przez obiektyw kamery albo słuchania i rejestrowania mikrofonem w kontekście relacji międzyludzkich i międzygatunkowych. W tle ich wspólnej pracy stoją pytania dotyczące etycznej strony powstawania sztuki w ramach programów rezydencji artystycznych, szczególnie w kontekście postkolonialnym.

Digital Nomads in Riga’s Contemporary Art Center until November 28

I have been invited to a truly great festival which title and list of topics was exactly in the thread of the research I’m doing for my project DIGITAL NOMADS.
It was very exciting to go to Riga and listen to all the key speakers, i must say that the format of conference/exhibition was exactly my thing. I hope to return to this amazing festival and definitely I will return to Riga (loved it!).
VIRTUALITIES AND REALITIES is the theme of this year’s RIXC Art Science festival in Riga, Latvia, that aims to establish a space for artistic interventions and conversations about the complex implications of immersive technologies.
RIXC Festival is internationally renowned gathering for artists and scholars working at the intersection of arts, digital humanities and science. This year’s festival programme features Public Keynotes, the 2nd Open Fields Conference, Exhibitions, Performances and AR/VR Showcases.
The main festival events will take place from October 19–21, 2017, in some of Riga’s most visible art venues – the Conference will take place in the Art Academy of Latvia, and the Latvian National Museum of Art, while the exhibitions – in kim? Contemporary Art Centre and RIXC Gallery spaces.

DIGITAL NOMADS AND SIMPLE GESTURES at PAMOJA GOODS IN KRAKÓW

PAMOJA FOUNDATION is a project run by artists and social entrepreneurs somewhere in between artistic practice and idealistic social work, between design and trade, Poland, Kenia, Indonesia and not only. I love the concept and people behind it , you can read a bit more about their fair trade cooperatives in Nairobi and their art auctions that fund education in Kenia. It happens so that both Digital Nomads and Simple gestures, my most actual and biggest projects, are both touching upon utopias. Utopia of solidarity, togetherness and multicultural communication. I research communities. Therefore the invitation from Pamoja to present my work in their shop/gallery in Cracow, was a real treat. I hope it’s just the beginning.

DIGITAL NOMADS to film dokumentalny edytowany na żywo, na podobieństwo muzyki miksowanej przez didżeja, pozostającego w rzeczywistym i symetrycznym kontakcie z publicznością. Składają się na niego portrety aktywistów kulturalnych i impresje dotyczące wagi rzeczywistych spotkań, struktury plemiennej klubu i tego czym jest kontrkultura. Autorka próbując odpowiedzieć na pytania o esencję budowania wspólnoty we współczesnych, wielokulturowych metropoliach, powiększa tym samym archiwum projektu, rzeźbiąc i zmieniając film przy każdym kolejnym pokazie. Każdy miks ” Digital Nomads” jest inny. Zdjęcia powstawały do tej pory w Berlinie, Amsterdamie i Nowym Jorku.

Jak przenieść bezpretensjonalność i energię bezpiecznej przestrzeni nocnego klubu w przestrzeń życia dziennego? To pytanie które stało się podwaliną działalności międzynarodowego kolektywu Physical People, którego częścią jest Julia Sokolnicka. Physical People to grupa performerów i artystów wizualnych, specjalizująca się w interwencjach w przestrzeni instytucji, galerii i przestrzeni miejskiej.

PROSTE GESTY
Proste Gesty (Simple Gestures) to tytuł projektu badawczego, który koncentruje się na choreografii konfrontacji i manierach w wielokulturowych społeczeństwach. Artystka usiłuje stworzyć wizualny podręcznik skodyfikowanych gestów, nawiązując do nieco już zdezaktualizowanej tradycji savoir vivre’u. W ramach warsztatów, Julia Sokolnicka przedstawi proces pracy nad wizualnym tradycjami stosowania skodyfikowanych gestów w przestrzeni publicznej. W swoich instalacjach audiowizualnych i pracy w teatrze artystka wielokrotnie odwoływała się do projektu, zanurzając się w badania nad dramaturgią spotkania i pierwszego kontaktu oraz emocjonalnego języka zdjęć ze stocku.
Warsztaty będą spotkaniem wokół znanych referencji i wymianą doświadczeń i poglądów między zebranymi, zakończoną próbą zainscenizowania gestów w których wyrośli uczestnicy, lub abstrakcyjnych “gestów przyszłości” które spróbujemy wspólnie stworzyć.
Czas trwania warsztatów 3 godziny. Warsztaty odbędą się w języku Polskim, ale istnieje możliwość tłumaczenia na język angielski. Zapraszamy uczestników z różnych kręgów kulturowych, w każdym wieku.
JULIA SOKOLNICKA urodzona w Warszawie (rocznik 83) mieszka i pracuje w Amsterdamie. Kształciła się w Warszawskiej Szkole Wajdy, na WRiTV w Katowicach i na Akademii Filmowej w Amsterdamie. Jej twórczość oscyluje między filmem eksperymentalnym, dokumentalnym, instalacją i performansem. Jako autorka teledysków, krótkich form dokumentalnych i kostiumów filmowych i teatralnych pracowała w Polsce, Niemczech, Stanach Zjednoczonych i Holandii. Pracowała także jako dziennikarka oraz fotoreporterka. Jej krótki film dokumentalny “Pobocze/Side Roads” nagrodzony został na festiwalach w Los Angeles i Mumbaju, a w Polsce pokazywały go Krakowski Festiwal Filmowy,T-Mobile Nowe Horyzonty i Festiwal Opolskie Lamy, a dystrybucją zajęły się TVP Kultura i ninateka.pl

Pamoja Goods invites Julia Sokolnicka – polish filmmaker and researcher based in Amsterdam for a weekend take over. We will present three projects elaborating on social schemes and bonding in the morphed edge of digital and real spaces. With the footage filmed in Amsterdam, New York City and Berlin.
DIGITAL NOMADS is an archive of documentary portraits and impressions on cultural movements in the large, international metropolis. The film is mixed live, like a DJ would mix music. The camera follows underground culture in New York, Amsterdam and Berlin, following questions of how will the future communities look like and what are the challenges and peculiarities of authentic bonding in the modern western economy. The film emphasizes on importance of dialogue and conversation as a tool of intellectual exploration and the dichotomy of the real space of social interactions and the space of technology. The project is ongoing and it has been launched in Eye Film Museum Amsterdam in June 2016. It has since been presented at several exhibitions in Netherlands and in KMMN Interim space in Kassel in the context of Documenta 14.

How to convey the safe space of night life into the day life? That question is one of many that funded Physical people, Amsterdam based collective in which performers from Poland, Netherlands, Taiwan and Argentina, intervene within institutional, art and public spaces with movement and loud music.

JULIA SOKOLNICKA – born in Warsaw in 1983 is an experimental and documentary filmmaker. Her current projects “Digital Nomads” and “Simple Gestures”combine performance art and cinema through formal experiments and theoretical exploration. Both focus on community bonding and identity of the global youth in the late capitalis, and address the utopias of solidarity and problems of multicultural societies.
She worked as a journalist and photographer, depicting her hometown-Warsaw in the era of it’s rapid development, focusing on cultural NGO’s and communitarian growth of the city.
For many years she was organising events around ethical fashion and conscious consumerism.
Her diverse body of work ranges from costume design, visual concepts for theatre, experimental filmmaking to music and dance videos. She studied Philosophy, Film Directing and graduated from Master of Film with an artistic research degree at Nederlandse Filmacademie in Amsterdam.
Her short documentary film “Side Roads” has received a number of international awards and a distribution in Polish cultural channels such as TVP Kultura and Ninateka.
She lives and works in Amsterdam.

Side Roads / Pobocze 2015

I Finally finished my three year journey through rural Poland. The talks and landscapes captured through out this amazing winter adventure finished up in Amsterdam , where I post-produced the film from Master of Film study budget. It’s 17 minutes and gradually and taking over world festivals. Ladies and gentlemen , my first film Side Roads.

Side Roads have travelled a long way since I finished the film in the Autumn 2015. We got selected to Krakow Film Festival, New Horizons Fil Festival Wrocław, Opolskie Lamy International Film Festival, Mumbai International Film Festival, Ivy Film Festival (Providence USA), Camerimage International Film Festival, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Film Festival in Pune (India), Heep an Eye Film Festival Eye Amsterdam.
It won Best Documentary at Los Angeles International Cultre Film Festival and Best Student Documentary at Mumbai International Film Festival.
Side Roads also got distributed at Ninateka.pl and in TVP Kultura

Creative Europe’s Studio New Horizons 2016

I had an honor to be invited and selected to take part in an intense workshop for international young producers and directors. I learned how complicated and expensive filmmaking is, but after two weeks of minor discouragement I’m back on track, stronger and so much wiser! I am among 9 other people from all over the world, in a group 2016, which is the year of our graduation.
The course unites artists of different origins who wish to innovate the language of film. We are focusing on both intellectual research and experiments in the field of film. Our graduation projects , that will be presented in June 2016 in Amsterdam’s EYE Institute, are supposed to be based on the research we work on through the whole programe.
